Title: A Rock is Lively
Author: Dianna Hutts Aston (writer), Sylvia Long (illustrator)

Publisher: Chronicle Books
Publication year: 2012
Category: Picture Book (non-fiction)
Source: Monroe 1 BOCES Overdrive E-Book Collection

Summary: A beautifully illustrated primer on rocks from their geological formation and make-up to the way they have been used throughout history.

Review: The photo-realistic watercolors were jaw-dropping. Although the text is jammed pack with information, Aston uses clear and easy to read language. The sections on the make-up of rocks was particularly strong. The section headings could easily double as explanatory poem on rocks (A rock is livey, A rock is mixed-up, A rock is galactic, A rock is old, A rock is…). Aston presents the information in a way that will inspire students to give the rocks beneath their shoes another look.

Classroom Use: I would use this as a non-fiction read-a-loud with students 4-8th grade.
